Rochelle Illinois Hotel Near Byron Nuclear Power Station














The Byron Nuclear Power Plant is located near our Rochelle Illinois hotel the US Express and the city of Byron Illinois. The power plant houses two Westinghouse reactors. The Power plant first went into operation in the mid 1980’s. Both reactors were built for Commonwealth Edison and are now operated by Exelon Corporation. The towers are massive, they rise 495 feet above ground.

The Power plant is not without controversy. In the early eighties there were several lawsuits to halt the facility construction. The League of Women Voter and the Dekalb Area Alliance for Responsible Energy and other filed these lawsuits. Operations were actually halted in 1984 and permission to operate the facility was only give after inspection of over 200,000 components was the facility able to begin operations.

Employing around six hundred people the Power plant generates enough electricity to provide power to over two million homes. As of 2007 the facility was give a “green” operation approval.
